bolog for caterpillar and today we
are going to talk about undercarriage
maintenance
undercarriage typically represents an
average of 50 of a machine's parts and
service costs so it's extremely
important to select the right
undercarriage from the start and to
properly maintain it to select the right
undercarriage you need to ask yourself
some key questions how long will i own
the machine how many hours a week will i
use the machine
what are my typical ground and soil
conditions what are my impact conditions
what are my attachments on the machines
and what are the grades and slopes that
are typical on my job sites so
caterpillar knows that one undercarriage
does not meet all customers needs and
underfoot conditions therefore
caterpillar has multiple offerings of
undercarriage designed to fit your
machine and underfoot conditions all
come as complete systems or as
components for example for dozers we
have the newly launched catabrasion
undercarriage for high abrasion low to
moderate impact conditions we also have
general duty for low to moderate
applications or for when the machine
ownership period is not that long and
for high impact applications we have
hdxl which is built to withstand the
high level of impact when the rocks get
big or you're in forestry
since undercarriage is a big investment
i highly recommend you consult with your
cat dealer they have the tools and the
deep expertise to help you select the
undercarriage that best matches your
needs now let's talk about maintenance
maintenance is the best way to lower
your owning and operating costs get the
longest life out of your undercarriage
and prevent failures
this machine is a D6 one of the main
things is a daily walk around you want
to do and check on most of your
components to make sure that everything
is in proper working order and
everything there's no abnormal wear
first things you want to check on is the
outside of your tracks and make sure
that none of your bolts are missing or
coming loose from your track links to
your shoes
and this all looks pretty good
next thing you want to look at is you
want to check out your link assembly and
your bushings and you want to make sure
that you don't have any abnormal
scalloping
or any pitting on your bushings with
showing forward or reverse wear
any stepping then we look at your
sprockets and here in your sprocket
pocket we're looking for mushrooming of
the iron which would show high speed
forward or high speed reverse
you would get back here over to your
idlers
and we check to see
for any raging or any abnormal
unshimming
everything looks good
then we check your rollers
we make sure all your rollers
are tight in there now
make sure everything's free of debris
and ready to roll
lastly we'll check on your carrier
roller make sure that any of this debris
sitting on top of the frame here doesn't
add up and stop and clog up the roller
from from spinning if the roller can't
spin the tracks will
roll over the top of it and wear a flat
spot on top of your carrier that will
cause a lot of accelerated wear and lose
a lot of life on your undercarriage
another thing you really want to think
about is track tension
you want to be able to see two dips
between your sprocket and your idler
here you can run a string from the top
to the bottom there's about an inch of
string between the grouser bar and the
string and that'll show correct tighten
another is your chrome right here
there's a max stretch on that
and if you exceed the max stretch all
your irons wear out
for your operators we want to make sure
that we're not running this machine in
high speed forward or reverse it causes
premature wear to your bushings and your
sprockets if your tracks are taut
your wear will accelerate it's very
important to keep a little bit of slack
in your tracks to allow for movement
between your iron so you don't
accelerate the wear too quick one of the
most important things about your dozer's
undercarriage life is keeping the actual
undercarriage clean
by relieving all the packing from inside
the links and the debris off of the
frame allows for your components to move
freely and it allows for the components
to last longer as well well thanks for
joining us and don't forget you get the
extra bottom line protection with cva
plans which offer maintenance cost per
hour guarantees contact your dealer with
questions and remember that proper
maintenance will help you lower
operating costs and get the most life
out of your undercarriage
